West Nile Virus

Provider Information

A review of hospital discharge data from 2009-2010 found that 80% of patients with illness potentially compatible with neuro-invasive arboviral disease were not tested for WNV. While there is no specific treatment for WNV, testing can help differentiate WNV from other conditions, provide anticipatory guidance for patients as they experience potentially lingering symptoms, and help mosquito control and public health agencies institute proper control measures to prevent further cases.

Reporting Criteria

Report any suspect case of WNV within one working day of identification to Contra Costa Public Health Communicable Disease Programs by phone at 925-313-6740 or fax the West Nile Virus Case Report Form to 925-313-6465.

Laboratory Testing

WNV testing is available through Contra Costa Public Health Laboratory by completing the Laboratory Requisition Slip. Regarding specific information on WNV specimen submittal please refer to the posted health advisory. For additional assistance with submittal call Contra Costa Public Health Laboratory at 925-370-5775.

Remember to submit specimens with the West Nile Virus Infection Case Report Form.
